Our Leadership

The Safe Choice Safety leadership team has more than 50 years of combined career experience in the health and safety industry. Through this experience and related training the team brings a specialized approach to health and safety education.

With a vision to ensure the highest quality health and safety education for all Canadians, Safe Choice Safety’s’ leadership team is also diligent in their instructor selection and training. Our focus is on providing interesting and interactive instruction in schools, workplaces and communities across the Atlantic Provinces’.

Jeff O'Neill's Profile

Jeff O’Neill founded Safe Choice Safety Services in 1999. As a passionate advocate for health and safety education, Jeff has made Safe Choice a leader in providing evidence-based and curriculum linked programs in Atlantic Canada.

Over the years, as Safe Choice was earning a strong reputation for quality programs and customer service within communities across the Atlantic Provinces, Jeff also successfully completed a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy. He is an ardent volunteer facilitator for youth leadership, mental wellness and safety awareness workshops, and consistently garners accolades as a highly skilled health and safety educator.

In addition to Safe Choice, Jeff also supports government, non-for-profit groups, and school boards in the development and implementation of a wide range of health promotion, prevention, and education programs. These programs have successful track records for increasing health and safety awareness within various levels of government, community, and schools throughout Atlantic Canada.

Kathryn Appleton's Profile

Kathryn is thrilled to be a part of the Safe Choice team since 2005. With a background in psychology and public relations, she brings a wealth of experience in communications tactics and strategies, coupled with knowledge and education in childhood development and evidence-based research.

After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax she travelled extensively in Canada, Europe and the Caribbean. Kathryn then went on to earn her public relations degree from MountSaint VincentUniversity and continues to stay on top of current and emerging trends in her field as a member of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).

Kathryn provides support and advice for communications material and strategies including multimedia applications, classroom presentations, and client communications and relations. She has a flair for the written word, a keen eye for photography and graphic design, and is a stickler for organization.

Len O'Neill's Profile

Len has over twenty-five years of extensive experience in the diverse disciplines of public health, occupational health and safety, and emergency management. He has a Masters in Health Services Management, a Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada), Certification as an Occupational Health and Safety Technologist and is also a Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist.

Over his distinguished career with government Len has occupied progressive positions of leadership, management and authority up to senior management. He has  completed numerous professional   development training courses, including Emergency Preparedness and Response Incident Command System (ICS) 100 to 300, Lead Auditor IS0 9001 and OHSAS 18001:2007, WHIMS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), and Advanced Public/Occupational Health Management. 

Len has also received numerous awards including the Prime Minister of Canada Appreciation- Halifax Summit, Health Canada Deputy Minister Award for Excellence as well as several Health Canada Assistant Deputy Minister Awards for Excellence.

SafeChoice is very pleased to have Len as a part of the team. As a senior occupational health and safety advisor and environmental public health professional, Len provides strategic advice and guidance for Safe Choice program offerings as well as policy creation and review.
